The Financial Landscape For Business Owners

DESCRIPTION

It is common to think of greed and fear as being bad things, but the reality is that both are necessary emotions for our survival and prosperity. They are a part of what makes us human, and together they have helped humanity survive and prosper.

So what does this have to do with investing?

Well, everyone has heard of the old saying “buy low and sell high”, and yet investors often do the opposite. The reason is misplaced greed and fear. We buy high because we are greedy, and fear missing out after something has gone up in price, and we sell low because we fear losing even more money after something has dropped in price.

What is the solution? How do we avoid letting our misplaced emotions get the better of us, and cost us money? The answer is simple, and yet not easy. We must evaluate the true worth of the things that we are buying (in this case the debt and equity of assets and real companies), and then find those that are priced below that true worth. In the world of investing this is known as business valuation, and that is what we will be talking about during this session.

They'll be discussing the following topic:

Topic: How a business is valued from an investment perspective

  • Barriers to entry/competitive advantage

  • Cash flow generation

  • Balance sheet indicators

  • Quality of management

  • Ownership structure of the business
